Thunderball : Scorpio Rising
Changing styles, like scene changes in a 70's thriller, Thunderball expertly maneuvers between drum n bass, downtempo, cinematic soul, bossa nova and breakbeat to create a fluid collection of low rider grooves. From the soulful D&B track Heart of the Hustler, to the high noon soundtrack, Angela's Lament, Thunderball once again demonstrate the depth and breadth of their production skills. Drum and bossa infused tracks like Vai Vai and Solar compliment the afro-cuban beats in Scorpio Rising and the dub-laden hip-hop of Stereo Tonic and Vibrations are sure to rock the late night beats.

A Race Of Angels : Broadcast No. 1
A Race of Angels make a unique sound. It's a blend of soul, 60's funk, grandiose string and horn arrangements, softly strummed acoustic guitar, and slow-tempo beats under quavering tenor vocals channeling a 60's/70's R&B/soul style that come across in a purposely lo-fi way.

The Winston Giles Orchestra : Soundtracks For Sunrise
The Winston Giles Orchestra, as you may suspect, is pretty much just Winston Giles and his studio. Giles uses a base of acoustic guitar instead of keyboards, with vocals on a few cuts. In live shows he sings and plays guitar, along with Dorian West on horns, keyboards, and beats.

Blue States : Nothing Changes Under The Sun
Blue States is the creation of Andy Dragazis, a Greek-born Londoner. His debut album, Nothing Changes Under the Sun, is a hypnotic mixture of moody keys, cinematic strings and beautiful melodies. Blue States show how far one can push the limits of electronic music by making songs that are timeless.

Various (ESL Music) : Modular Systems
Compiled by Thievery Corporation, this is a brand new collection of tracks from ESL Music artists. It is the first time these cuts have been available on compact disc and the collection is a great introduction to ESL newcomers Farid and Desmond Williams. Includes two very rare Thievery Cororation tracks, Bario Alto and A Guide for I and I, two remixes by the duo, as well as tracks by Farid, Desmond Williams, and Thunderball previously only available on vinyl.

Various (Kinkysweet) : Frequent Flyer: Departure Lounge
Kinkysweet is one in a disconnected collective of labels that cater to the post-techno-era lifestyle. Sometimes closely related to the world of Ibiza chillout, but often too soulful, funky, jazzy, ethnic and grounded to belong. That's exactly the space Kinkysweet resides in, and exactly what you get with the sixth installment of their nicely selected Frequent Flyer series; Departure Lounge.

Randolph : Lonely Eden
The great city of Detroit has given us many great musicians over the years, from Aretha Franklin to Eminem – and now it's given the world Randolph. "Lonely Eden" is a breathtaking eclectic record with everything from funk to soul, from blues to R&B, and all of it as smooth as silk. Randolph has already made a name for himself, sitting in with the likes of Buddy Guy, P-Funk and War. The great Jazzanova have also remixed ‘Believer' and they know a thing or two about the groove.

Various (Water Music) : Hotel Chill 2
Hotel Chill 2 is the second in the Hotel Chill series from Water Music Records. Water Music Records deals exclusively in lounge, chill out, and downtempo music, and produces a lot of quality compilations. This a 2-disc compilation of relaxing tracks running through a variety of styles, featuring along with some of the big names of chill out music, a lot of lesser known acts. There is definitely something for everyone, and it makes a really good introduction to the chill out scene.

Various (Modus Vivendi) : Modus Vivendi Music Vol. 2
If you aren't yet familiar with Los Angeles based label Modus Vivendi Music, that'll change soon enough, and their latest label sampler, "Modus Vivendi Music Vol. 2" is the reason I'm so sure of it. The Modus artist & producer collective has been hitting it dead center as of late and this compilation illustrates with some really nice up and down tempo dub, Latin, and analoged out, leatherette club grooves. Not too polished, not too raw, and tapped in.

Subatomic Sound System : Our Father (Golden remix)
Various (Water Music) : Sounds From the All Asia Pass Volume 01
As a concept piece this compilation suffers from three things – a lack of fresh songs, too many canned beats and not enough specifically Asian content. Most of these songs are culled from Water Music's back catalog, so they are several years old by now. The artificial rhythms seem out of place within the gentle and refined medium of Eastern music, so it would help if the beats weren't in the front of the mix, as they are on many of the sixteen tracks. of course this pokes at a tenant of "chillout" music, so I know the point is an arguable one. All this being said, freshly minted or not, some of these tracks are quite enjoyable.

Various (ESL Music) : ESL Remixed: The 100th Release of ESL Music
When a label like ESL Music reaches its 100th release it's definitely time to celebrate. Few other labels have reached and maintained the status that Eighteenth Street Lounge Music has with such impeccably cosmopolitan style. In a moment of introspection, ESL has put together a 14-track compilation that dually encompasseses the labels past and future, and when it comes to who's mixing who on this collection it's a lovefest of talent.

Ror-Shak : Deep
For DB and Stakka, the duo behind Ror-Shak, music is nothing new. Each of them has been DJ'ing for pretty much the past 20 years and DJ Stakka's been working out his production skills since 1991. Their roots are heavily planted in the jungle and drum n bass scenes and with their debut album as Ror-Shak called "Deep" those roots come through, diffused nicely by various elements of downtempo, triphop and ambient electronics.
